Neonz are a limited collection of 10,000 unique avatars, randomly generated from futuristic neon character art by Sutu. Each avatar generated includes hand drawn static and animated art rooted in cyber culture. Like an exquisite corpse the combination of character traits include, unique head gear, face paint, clothing, masks and glasses.
In April 2022, Sutu was invited to the Ted Main Stage to talk about the Metaverse and more specifically, the Sutuverse! Big idea: We can use metaverse technology to create digital art that enhances and enriches our physical spaces. How? When many people imagine our metaverse future, they envision a reality where they’ll spend more and more of their lives at home, online and interfacing with others through a digital avatar. But if you’re anything like augmented reality designer Sutu, you don’t want to be stuck inside staring at screens anymore. Sutu’s work shows us how digital art and digital experiences can heighten our experiences of community, creativity and connection in the real world.

'Choose Your Player' was Sutu's first solo exhibition in the US. Like much of Sutu's work the collection explores themes in contemporary digital culture. This project is a commentary on the popular Picture for Profile (PFP) culture within the NFT community, where users adopt a unique profile pic to represent their identity in the Metaverse.
Over the course of 2021, I released a series of neon-inspired artworks as NFTs. Each artwork features frame-by-frame hand-drawn animation, with the entire collection culminating in over 6000 individual frames of animation. The artwork often explores popular themes in cyber and digital culture.
Breonna loved uplifting the community and bringing people together. Breonna’s Garden is an Augmented Reality experience being created in collaboration with Ju’Niyah Palmer, Breonna Taylor’s little sister. The intention of this project is to honor the life of Breonna Taylor while cultivating a safe space online to process complex emotions such as grief. Breonna’s Garden is a sacred space for anyone who wants to share a message of hope for Breonna’s family. Or, a message in remembrance of someone they miss.

I worked on visuals for the Dillon Francis Virtual Concert by Wave XR. I was aiming to design a full internet meme-meltdown! Flying rainbow pegasus, Geraldine back up dancers, Cowboy Skellie, 3-eyed illuminati cat, Windows blue screen of death, lightning, pinatas, confetti! Always happy to see a bunch of these wacky ideas made it into the show!
I teamed up with Wave to create the virtual concert for Alison Wonderland. I was a lead artist on the project and I designed several avatars that appeared during the concert including Bruce, the giant forest Spirit who became a bit of a viral phenomenon. For my avatars I also used MoCap to animate them. I also created the Crystal environment, along with many VFX that were triggered during the show and were audio reactive.

Future Historians is part 1 of a tryptych exploring perceptions of reality at a time when our natural world is experiencing unprecedented decline while our virtual worlds proliferate. There is an ongoing trend in the digital arts industry to create a simulacrum of our physical world by fabricating massive databases of off-the-shelf flora and fauna and physical artefacts and then replicating our laws of nature via complex physics engines. The holy grail being to pass a visual Turing test, where the virtual simulations are unparalleled to our physical world. Future Historians combines Sutu's own 3d models with 3d stock assets and various animation FX to present a series of glitched-out virtual worlds that fall short of the physical realities their trying to mimic.

I collaborated with Wave XR to create key art for The Weeknd Virtual Concert. It was a first of its kind Virtual Concert presented on Tik Tok that drew over 2M viewers, and raised $350,000 for Equal Justice Initiative at a crucial time when America was undergoing civil unrest in response to police brutality whilst simultaneously enduring the Covid pandemic. I created all the neon art, the veins that grow through the City, the stabby girls and pre-visualised the final scene.
'We are cavemen of the virtual age!' My collaboration with Fashion Designer Damara Ingles for the immersive fashion show ‘The Fabric of Reality’ presented in the Museum of Other Realities VR app. The experience is open to the public for one year. This is Bigger Love, visualized! A live virtual concert experience in collaboration with Wave. I created hand drawn animations in Ooh Laa (the first song) and also set dressed the dance hall.
Created during the 2020 COVID pandemic, these works reflect the subconscious emotional landscapes triggered by the crisis. The fear and uncertainty, the information fatigue and the desire to escape into fantasy worlds. We were also locked down for months so I taught myself how to sculpt in Medium and how to use Blender 3D.

Inspired by Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness, this science fiction adaptation is set on the dwarf planet Ceres where Astro-biologist Captain Kurtz has gone missing from his outpost. It is your mission to retrieve Kurtz. As you journey deep into the Ceres cave network you will learn the story of Kurtz disappearance via the onboard Artificial Intelligence Teeva.
Our story begins with Edith, a 14-year-old who lives in the village of Centre Lobo with her parents and eight siblings. At the age of seven, Edith started to feel a pain in the side of her face. The pain eventually grew into a tumor on her lower right jaw the size of lemon. Edith is mocked and teased at school, and even accused of being the victim of witchcraft. Despite the hardships she faces, Edith is notably happy and playful. We follow Edith as she travels by foot through the jungle for days in order to have a life-transforming surgery.
This project is part of the Oculus VR for Good Creators Lab program in partnership with Mercy Ships. I Illustrated Edith's dream scenes in VR.

Since the release of VR art programs such as Tilt Brush, Gravity Sketch, Quill and Anime VR, I've been enjoying exploring the possibilities of immersive spatial art making. In my opinion this new practise represents the biggest revolution in digital art making. It still blows my mind that I can stand inside my own art and that I can manipulate it scale it and add to it in real time. I've been fortunate to be on the beta testing teams for a lot of those art programs and it's been exciting to give feedback and watch their evolution.
I've been working with the WaveVR to create immersive concert visuals for Kill the Noise, Ready Player One, and Jean-Michel Jarre. Each project has had a unique aesthetic, created in rsponse to the music. All of the VR art that I can create is also available to the Wave community, allowing artists to use the assets for hosting their own VR concerts via the WaveMaker.
I created the visuals for a live VR concert to launch the Equinoxe Infinity album by Jean-Michel Jarre. Every song on the album had its own immersive world design with audio-reactive visuals.

The Ready Player One story is riddled with references from 80s pop culture and I was given access to do what I liked with any Midway Game arcade IP, so I created a giant multi-dimensional retro-arcade tower of babel. Yes, it was one of the funnest projects ever! :)

Polaxis writes about his day to day life, but all his secret information, his paranoid delusions and conspiracy theories, he hides away in the Augmented Reality layer.

I collaborated With Steve Teeps and Danny Bittman on a large scale Tilt Brush for a Doctor Strange immeersive VR experience. Each artist was given a dimension to paint and a location. I chose the spirit dimension and set it in Hong Kong. I hadn't seen the film at the time so I mostly got my inpsiration from what I'd seen from the trailer. I was later flown to Hong Kong to do some painting on top of a building. We captured footage of me painting whcihc became the source for the mixed reality trailer.
The Ice caps have melted and all the worlds waste has floated to Greenland. It's an end-of-the-world tale of two brothers, Piitaaraq and Aqqalu, as they sail their boat north, scavenging through mountains of trash, searching for food, supplies and signs of life. The project was created in residency at the Ilulissat Museum, in collaboration and inspired by Piitaaraq Zeeb Berthelsen and his family.

NAWLZ is a Webby award winning cyberpunkcomic series available online and as an iPad app. It combines animation, interactivity, music and text to create an interactive digital panoramic comic format. The story follows Harley Chambers as he kicks through the futuristic City of Nawlz, engaging in overlaying virtual realities, mind-bending drugs and other strange techno-cultures.

Set over three episodes, NEOMAD follows the story of the Love Punks, a group of techno savvy young heroes from the Pilbara who speed through a digitised desert full of spy bots, magic crystals, fallen rocket boosters and mysterious petroglyphs. Initially released as an interactive iPad app, the series is now also available in book form.
The Gatecrashers is a transmedia storyworld created by Zachary Mortensen with art by Sutu. The Gatecrashers is set in Palomar City, a near-future American mega-city with stories that revolve around the dangerous, high-octane lifestyle of ambulance drivers – called Gatecrashers.
A diseased tribe will stop at nothing to seek out the healing properties of the Mercen Draxt. Krysalis is a brutal fantasy exploring ideas of the survival of the fittest. It is a 40 page, mostly silent comic, with only a few words every ten pages or so. The stories of Krysalis were inspired during a work through the Costa Rican jungle, where all elements of nature are at war.
From lead artist, Pyaré, SPACED OUT is an underwater VR experience using the revolutionary VR waterproof headset, DiVR by Ballast Technologies. It invites visitors to float on water while breathing with a snorkel, giving an illusion of being immersed onto the lunar surface. SPACED OUT transports the visitors from earth to the moon, from water to space and from the first to the third person leaving body behind, to reach the moon and then its hollow center. The trip crosses in a tunnel of lines and points, a trajectory of the Earth on the surface of the moon, where the last Apollo 11 mission landed. SPACED OUT’s narration is composed by original audio archives of the communication between the three astronauts and the mission control. The running audio track clashes with the abstract 3D visual representation of what the 19th century writers believed the moon looked like. The piece is like a magic trick: simulating absence of gravity it bypasses the brain’s predispositions for an immersion of all senses.
